Casa Pati Blau - Fran Silvestre Arquitectos
We need to go back to the times of the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula to understand the genesis of the so-called Valencian alquerías, traditional country houses far from the villages that, at that time, began to concentrate a good part of the population of the Ribera Alta, near the city of Valencia, in northeastern Spain. With the passing of the centuries, these small groups of houses were eventually incorporated by the cities in full process of growth and urban expansion, places that still today provide an enviable quality of life due to their proximity to nature and the advantages of living connected to the benefits that the big city offers. The Pati Blau House project emerges as a reinterpretation of this typology. The irregular shape of the plot was regularized through the inclusion of small support spaces and facilities such as a gym and a storage room, freeing up the central strip of land for the design of a large house integrated with a side yard. In this way, the first floor of the house extends naturally towards the garden and the pool, from where the residents can enjoy the favorable climate of these latitudes.
The private areas of the house are on the upper floor, away from the common areas on the first floor to provide greater privacy for the residents. Its solid volumetry, with punctual openings, also operates as an instrument to protect the interior spaces from nearby neighbors. However, we sought to design a continuous facade of simple forms and simple volumetry, allowing a coherent reading for those approaching the house from the access street. In a complementary way, the garage space - set back from the façade - works as a transition element, creating a void over which the volume of the house seems to float. Looking for inspiration in Alejandro de la Sota's project in Tarragona or in many of the projects created by Aires Mateus, we tried to create a geometric façade where the retreats are complementary to the advances, where transparency opposes opacity, creating a game of full and empty that conceals the weight of the house's built structure.
